Godaddy Domain Name Transfer
The following information explains the procedure for transferring an already
registered domain at another registrar into your
GoDaddy.com account.
The domain name transfer process involves several parties (including you) and
requires many steps so you will need to know the important details of this
process.
That's why we have prepared this tutorial to help you make your domain name
transfer as smooth as possible!
Domain Name Transfer Tutorial
Step 1. First, log into your current registrar account and unlock
your domain. Also, check the email address on this
domain.
YOUR EMAIL ADDRESSES ON BOTH REGISTRARS MUST BE THE
SAME.
Step 2. Go to Godaddy
HERE and purchase a domain transfer. You will be
using the same domain name that is currently registered
elsewhere.
Also, be sure that you use the same email address for
the domain transfer order at
GoDaddy that is on the same
domain at your current registrar account.
YOUR EMAIL ADDRESSES ON BOTH REGISTRARS MUST BE THE
SAME.Note: If you have purchased a website
from us and are leaving the website on our hosting
account, then select the option in your
GoDaddy order
process to "leave the nameservers the same as they are
with the current registrar."
Step 3. Once you have completed the
purchase of your domain transfer at
GoDaddy , Godaddy
will send you an email with important information.
This email will have Transaction ID and Security Code.
Note: If you entered an email address that has a spam blocker or
requires whitelisting, then you should whitelist to ensure that you receive all
communication from both Godaddy and the current domain
registar. If you miss these emails, you transfer will
fail.
Step 4. Log back into your
GoDaddy account
and in the Your Account link at the top menu, right
click to see the options. There you will find "Pending
Transfers".
Click on Pending Transfers and in th window to the
right, find the domain transfer you purchased. Check the
box to the left of the domain name and click on the
button in the far upper right that says, Authorization.
Now the screen in the box has a place for your to
enter the Transaction ID and Security Code.
Step 5. At this point, you will then need an
Authorization code FROM the current registrar holding
your domain.
You may need to log back into your current registrar
account to initiate that Authorization code.
Or, you may need to wait to get this code in an email
from the current registrar holding your domain once they
have been notified by
GoDaddy that a domain transfer has
been initiated (this happens behind the scenes and there
is nothing for you to do other than to buy the domain
transfer).
Every registrar is different about this process so
contact your registrar on how to get this code.
Step 6. Once you have received the
Authorization code from the other registrar, log back
into your
GoDaddy account. Again, go to "Pending
Transfers."
Check the check box to the left of the domain. You
will see that the upper menu is now highlighted.
Click on Accept Transfer.
Enter the Auth code into the box and click Next.
Step 7. The status of your domain
transfer is now, Pending Current Registrar Approval at
GoDaddy.com.
You may or may not (depending upon the registrar) receive an email
from the current registrar of the domain notifying you
that the transfer is set in place. Often, the email will tell you to do nothing
and that is what you should do.
At this point it is a matter of waiting for the
transfer to happen in the ethers of the internet.
The transfer usually takes from 5 - 7 days to complete.
If the transfer does not go within a week, go back to
GoDaddy and reinitiate the transfer to start the process
again.
